Hookers? Is this Place for Real?

Little India Singapore

This is obviously a play on Hooters. When I saw this at Desker Road, the red light district at Little India, I wondered if I was seeing right. I did some googling and found that this is actually a popular bar. They even have a Facebook page. Their whole name is Hooker@Desker Bar and Grill. I guess the racy suggestive name is quite a head turner and must be a draw for people who like to go clubbing. Not me though – I am the shy sort who would rather just go to a cafe. Anyway I am too old to partake in the very lively night scene in Singapore.

It seems there are other bars in Singapore with suggestive names too.

Expat Bostonian, Crystal also saw a few names that made her giggle.

There are red light districts in Singapore? I didn’t know that. So prostitution is legal in designated areas? It’s completely illegal in the U.S. I’ve seen the red light district in Amsterdam and that was very interesting. Women are on display in store windows!

They are not quite on display and it’s not openly advertised but it’s like most people in Singapore know that some areas in Singapore are seedy. I must find out more about this legal prostitution to let you know. At the moment I am not quite sure myself about the legal bit.

The seedy areas are Geylang and Desker Road.

Technically prostitution is legal in one county in Nevada in the US. However, prostitution is alive and well in the USA. Primarily through “escort” agencies and “independent” women who run their own businesses, usually via their websites.

Prostitution in Singapore is legal, but various prostitution-related activities are not. This includes public solicitation, living on the earnings of a prostitute and maintaining a brothel. In practice, police unofficially tolerate and monitor a limited number of brothels. Prostitutes in such establishments are required to undergo periodic health checks and must carry a health card.[1] Apart from these regulated brothels, commercial sex workers can be found in many “massage” or “spa” establishments. Some massage parlours, including tui na outlets, employ scantily clad women from mainland China and offer massages as a pretext for sexual services. These activities are illegal, and the operators of such massage establishments risk jail if exposed by anti-vice police raids. Yet, virtually everyone who visits such establishments is fully aware of the sexual services provided within, and are there precisely because of it. The main red-light district in Singapore is in Geylang. Orchard Towers, nicknamed the “Four Floors Of Whores”, is a shopping centre frequented by prostitutes. Some bars in Duxton Hill also offer sexual services.

I’ve been to Orchard Towers…it’s an experience, that’s for sure. And it’s pretty damn obvious that there’s a ton of solicitation going on. I went up to the bar to get water for Ravi and I on my own (Ravi was standing over by a table or something) and the guy next to me at the bar touched my arm and raised an eyebrow at me in invitation. Personally, I found it hysterically funny, but that’s because guys in US dance clubs are far more aggressive than that (FAR FAR more aggressive) and I’m pretty hard to offend when it comes to sex (unless what you’re doing/saying is degrading). Ravi teased me about earning some extra shopping money.
