Tripadvisor is a site I always check out before booking a hotel. After all, what can beat the combined reviews of guests from all over the world who have actually stayed at the hotel. Tripadvisor has just published their best of 2011 list and I was curious about whether Singapore would feature at all. I am happy to report that we did. Although to be honest I have never heard of this hotel till I saw the list.
The Quincy Hotel which is under the Far East Hospitality Group (also develops condos), made it to number 7 of the Trendiest Hotels in the World List. It’s located on 22 Mount Elizabeth Road next to The Elizabeth Hotel which is also owned by the same developer.
The hotel was designed by Ong and Ong (firm started by the former President of Singapore, Ong Teng Cheong and his wife and now run by their son Ong Tze Boon). I have a very good opinion of Ong Tze Boon, because some years ago, not knowing what an upmarket organization this was, I randomly wrote to him directly and asked for a quote for a small renovation and I remember immediately getting a very personal and polite reply. Only later did I realize that this was no small firm and no way in heck we could we afford it. Well they probably didn’t do such teeny weeny projects either. But just from that response I now have a really good opinion of this person. Humility is underrated and I am always impressed by it.
I checked out their official website and saw this Staycation promotion just for Singapore residents. To me it’s still a bit expensive but I guess if it’s twin sharing with a friend, and you can divide the cost. For me I’d rather take a ferry to a Bintan resort which would be about the same price or a trip to our neighbouring Malaysia. I guess I need to be out of the country to feel like it’s a real vacation.

For Asia, Thailand featured quite prominently on all the lists which does not surprise me as they are renowned for hospitality.
And the top hotel in the world was Golden Well in Prague, a place I have never been to.
Tripadvisor also announced their list of filthiest hotels and sadly two Singapore hotels made the cut. I wonder if Tripadvisor will get sued for it, like the case of the Fish Head Curry blogger in Malaysia. I just want to point out how ridiculous that would be as this is the collective opinion of a number of guests, but it’s basically the same premise. The opinion of ordinary people. Let’s just discount that fact that among those reviews there could be some reviews planted by the people in the industry, my conspiracy theory of spies from other hotels? Who knows? This made me wonder how Tripadvisor reduces the probability of such a thing.
