Satay (pronounced Saa-thay) is malay style meat, usually chicken or mutton, that is glazed with honey and skewered onto wooden sticks. It is accompanied with a steamed rice cake called ketupat, raw onions and cucumbers which are divine when dipped into the accompanying gravy. The gravy is a spiced peanut sauce and satay wouldn’t be the same without it. During the grilling process the expert satay man will fan the charcoal fire and it can get quite smoky, but I just love the well grilled sweetish meat. In the 80’s when things were not as expensive, the satay man used to come to our house parties if we ordered at least 100 sticks. That was so good. Fresh off the charcoal.
