Ask for butterfly wings and you’ll get this delightful chinese sweet pastry. Don’t you agree that it’s shaped like a butterfly? It’s dough thats deep-fried and sprinkled with sesame seeds. Believe me it’s deep-fried and oily, but oh so chewy and delightful. It is traditionally a breakfast food but it’s lovely as a snack any time of the day. It is definitely a reason to be happy in Singapore where you can get this most food centres and it’s only 90 Singapore cents.

The one featured here was from the Dough Fritter stall at the Food Republic at the new mall called 313@Somerset, which is connected to the Somerset MRT station. My favourite of the dough fritters is green bean Ham Chin Peng which is a bit harder to find but so divine. It’s made from the same dough but is salted with a lovely paste made from green mung beans (not the vegetable). It’s also known as a Chinese savoury donut minus the hole. I would take this over a donut any day.

Try that dough fritter stall in Food Republic Vivo. They are definitely one of the better ones around. I think they might have that green bean ham chin peng you like 😉

Mmmmmm I love Ham Chim Peng but I’ve not eaten it in 1 or 2 years because it’s so sinful!!! It’s amazing that this could be breakfast food since it’s so deepfried. But then again, who would have thought Bacon and Eggs could be breakfast food….

And to think I only discovered Ham Chin Peng when I was in my twenties. Unimaginable!
