This scene is characteristically Singapore to me. Public housing and clothes on bamboo poles. It was the same scene in the 70’s and surprisingly not much has changed much since then. Personally I think dryers are great and less in danger of falling on your head, but electricity costs too much in Singapore and the sun is free. I guess this is environmentally friendly too?
When I was very young we used to have an indian lady who came by to wash the clothes traditionally. She washed them by hand on a wooden board and scrubbed the clothes with a brush. We called her aunty and she had a lovely toothless reddish grin from the betal leaves she loved to chew.
