Whenever there is major news reported in our local media, I try to find an alternative unbiased perspective. So for the article saying that Singapore’s population would swell if people could migrate freely, I decided to go directly to the source.
I find the results of the poll really surprising. I can understand New Zealand, Switzerland and Australia’s appeal but not the others. What about the USA? If you are interested you can read more at Gallup. The article is a bit misleading as it is stated that population size affects the rankings. The USA is still the top most desired destination for migration, for most people. I would really like to know among the current population in Singapore, what percentage would leave if they had the option. That would give a truer reflection of how happy people are, living here.
I am not surprised that there are a lot of people from Asia who would like to migrate here because of jobs and safety. Perhaps they chose Singapore as it might be easier to adapt to an Asian environment.
Off the top of my head, I would personally chose Switzerland, The US, Australia and New Zealand as the most desirable places to move to. A big factor for me is safety, air quality, climate and abundance of nature. I miss having a more pristine natural environment in Singapore. I love everything about the country, and am not too fond of an overpopulated place. Well, not totally remote but somewhere in between, with the best of both worlds. What about you?
If it were up to me, the countries I would chose to migrate to would be (in no particular order):
- New Zealand (for obvious reasons, because I’ve already lived there and I have friends and I know I will love it there)
- The UK (I love British pop culture, TV and music so much it just seems like a logical progression!)
- A Scandinavian country like Sweden, Finland or Norway (we hear so much about them being the Happiest Countries and best education, best social welfare, etc. etc. I would love to put that to the test)
And if I had to choose an Asian country I would probably want to go to Japan. Even though I’m not always a big fan of Japanese pop culture I love the strength of their identity, and how even though Western pop culture can be massively popular they have always been able to hold on to themselves.
Oo yes…I have never been there but I love everything Scandinavian. My fave in Asia is Japan too, although I’ve only been to Tokyo for a very short trip.
